Pain medicine FAQ

Tell me about your epidural, I'm scared of mine?

I'm getting induced in five days, and I've chosen to get an epidural, although I keep hearing horror stories about the pain and it's scaring me. I'm 18 and this is my first baby, and I have no idea what to expect. Some say that epidurals don't hurt as bad as they say, and others say that the pain is awful in your back as they put it in, and still others claim it doesn't work at all. Honestly, how painful is the insertion and are the side effects really that bad? I don't want to pain myself for no reason, but I don't want to ruin myself with medicine either. I need the truth about epidurals vs. natural vaginal birth. Thank you mommies!!

Pain after wisdom teeth sutures removed?

I had my wisdom teeth extracted a week ago and my oral surgeon removed a little piece of suture today. About two hours later, the extraction site started hurting. Not a sharp pain, but a dull pressure pain, i dont need to take medicine for this pain, but why is this happening? I thought you dont feel anything after sutures are removed. Should I make an appointment or wait it out? I dont think its dry socket because i am not experiencing sharp pain and im not taking medicine. Thanks! I called the surgeon and visited him. He looked in there and told me he couldnt find the bloodclot and that it wasnt there. he also took out a tiny piece of food. He gave me a plastic syringe and told me to wash the hole. Ive been rinsing many times a day though using a cup with warm salt water. My case is sooo weird. I had NO pain at all the past 5 days and the pain i have today is so minimal that I dont need medicine for it. Ugh, i hate this. I guess i STILL cant eat even a week after my surgery. Bummer.

Is my period abnormal?

I'm 24 and I only bleed heavily for 2 days and then I spot for about 3 days. The 1st day of bleeding is the worst with terrible cramping in my abdomen, legs and breasts. I absolutely dread that day every single month especially when I have to work. I don't take any kind of pills or medicine so the only thing that seems to help lessen the pain are hot baths and heating pads. The rest of my period isn't as painful, just a little uncomfortable in my pelvic area. My mom and sisters all have 7 days of bleeding but don't have much pain. I don't know which situation is worse but all I know is I cannot tolerate this pain much longer. I don't know if it has anything to do with it but I'm a virgin and have never used tampons. I read that bananas are good for cramping but I don't have the taste for them anymore.

Advice on Silent Reflux/Colic/Gassy baby?!?

I have a 13 week old baby. He has had problems from day one with being fussy. I started breastfeeding and stopped after 1 month. He was up every 2 hours eating and crying. I tried taking dairy out of my diet even kept a journal of everything I had ate each day. I was exhausted so I decided to try to switch him to soy formula. He did better on that but became constipated and had very hard stools (he was still fussy but not as bad as when breastfeeding). His doctor suggested switching him to a formula for fussy babies (Similac Isomil Advance SOY). He was horrible on it and would cry for an hr each night and would fart and fart and fart until finally would cry himself to sleep. His doctor then told us to try Nutrimagen. It has worked wonders for him. He doesn't have gas anymore and poops regularly. Before with the gas being so bad I thought that it was the only reason for his fussiness. When he eats I will stop to burp him after 2 ounces and once he gets a burp out he becomes fussy and refuses to eat. He acts hungry but won't take his bottle and will only take his binkie. He also arches his back and makes talking sounds like he has more burps. If I don't stop to burp him after 2 ounces he will eat 4 then start the arching episode. I will then get anywhere from 5 to 10 burps out of him. He occassionally has a small spit up that is very thick and mucusy. At night he will fall asleep at 7 after bath, massage, feeding and rocking (or bouncing depending on him being fussy or not). He wakes up at 12 gets another feeding of 4 ounces and falls back asleep (he falls back asleep calmly during the night and doesn't really act like he needs to be burped), then between 12 and 5 he makes constant noises and never stops moving like he has a burp or something is bothering him. He wakes up at 5 and is up the rest of the day. I saw something about silent reflux and I don't know if that's what he has or not. He doesn't really spit up like I said so I always ruled out reflux. Things are just getting so exhausting for us. Between 12 am-5 am we are up because of his noises we can't sleep through them we try burping him we try feeding him again rocking him, changing diaper, everything. If we try too much then he gets mad. Any advice? I talked to his doctor today and she prescribed Ranitidine (Zantac) 2 ML twice daily. I don't want to have to give him medicine if I don't have to. It just seems like he's always in pain from day one and I feel like a failure! I also started yesterday propping his mattress up and have been feeding him smaller more frequent meals (keeping him upright for 20 min after feeding). Thank you for taking the time to read and respond!

Muscle Relaxants cause chronic Dizzyiness?

I've been puzzled by a mystery for some years and counting. Here I'll give you an idea of what I am asking at this time, it was in 91' that I took a muscle relaxant for a lower back pain. I am not fully clear of the prescription, but it was close to the name diazepam. It was a house shaped like pill....By the 3rd day of taking the muscle relaxant, I was starting to experience dizzyiness & vomitting for like 2 1/2 days. Should have gone straight to the ER, but b/f at that time didn't think they have answers. I've been stuck with something that no one can explain or clear up that mystery. Now that I think about it, would it be a bad reaction, or the pharmacy filled the prescription with the wrong type of medicine to treat me and I went through a terrible phase of dizzyiness and vomitting, lost 10 lbs in 2 weeks. Was like that OFF and ON for good 8 yrs...No doctor can figure that out? Question is, could a muscle relaxant cause permanent damage, like being stuck to live with chronic dizziness? Kind replies pls, I can ONLY ASK for clues, a closure to know what I can do and CANNOT do for the rest of my life. Hmm, you got me...Here I'll say this currently not on any muscle relaxant meds since 91'. But the chronic dizziness is with me whether I like it or not. I was perfectly in normal health, and after taking the muscle relaxant, my life was uprooted, relationship out the window, almost costed me my job...Does this help?
