Osteoporosis FAQ

prvention is better than cure?

I was recently prescribed a biphosphonate (like Fosamax but under a different name). I've been given this as a preventative to osteoporosis without having had a bone density test. I have been reading very nasty things about these drugs and am reluctant to take it. It is supposedly in the same class as bath cleaner and needs more research. Anyway, my question is this:- Don't you think that we (women in particular) should be told at an early age what to do to prevent osteoporosis rather than wait until it's too late and have doctors ply us with these drugs? Anama - As I have hit the menopause (albeit slightly early) and refused to take HRT my gynaecologist put me on a biphosphonate. He said for me to do a BDT in one year's time. That was last week but I have decided not to take it and concentrate on a good diet, exercise and a bit of sun.
