Metoprolol FAQ

Does anyone have a history of fainting?

Since I was 16, I have been to 5 different cardiologists and 2 different neurologists. I am now almost 27. I've been told I have vasalvagal syncope. I was positive for a tilt-table test. All 7 doctors have given me different medicines, one recommended a pace maker. I've been on all the beta blockers, atenolol, metoprolol, and even klonopin. No medicines have helped. I pass out at least 2 times per month and come close at least 3 times a day. The majority of my episodes occur when I am about to fall asleep, I just wake up, or I begin to fall asleep for a nap during the day. The worst episodes happen if I try to take a nap during the day. I will be messed up for the rest of the day...light headed, weak, shaky, breathless, super fast heart beat then sudden very slow heart beat. It drives me crazy and I have given up on finding out what it is. A friend had me try marijuana once when I was having an episode and it stopped my crazy heartbeat and made me feel better, but obviously I can't do this everytime I have an episode. Anyone ever dealt with this? I don't want a pacemaker since only one Dr recommended it and he wasn't even sure it would help. I'm tired of living like this.

Honestly, why in the USA must we have prescriptions for drugs that are over the counter in most countries?

Honestly, why in the USA must we have prescriptions for drugs that are over the counter in almost every other country? I am not talking about drugs with any street value. There are plenty of over-the-counter drugs that kids get high on. I was married to a woman that would get stoned on over-the-counter ‘Primatine’. I know all about that crap. When drugs go to over-the-counter in the USA the price falls out. I remember when loratadine was prescription only. Yes, 30 pills were about $50 without insurance. Now $5 will buy 100 in the USA. That is about half what you pay in Mexico. Omeprazole recently switched to over the counter, and the price is falling. Soon it will cost less in the USA than in Mexico. Honestly I already know I need to take. I only see a doctor twice a year (that is about all my lame health insurance will pay for). He prescribes the same thing every time. After that I end up paying several hundred in prescriptions. The doctor will write a prescription for 3 months worth, because he wants more revenue from more visits. As a result I have been buying metoprolol (25mg), simvastian (5mg), and omeprazole (20mg) in Mexico for several years now. I know where I can buy a six month supply for about $50. Not only that but they have a free English speaking doctor for their customers (if you do not mind waiting). What more can I ask for? I never have any trouble with US customs. They ask me what the meds are for. I tell them, hypertension, cholesterol, and stomach. They send me on my way. Yes, I get some other shopping in while I am there. I always have a good time! BTW: I am a software developer. I make 68K a year before taxes. [SARCASM] Homeless people have better health insurance than I have [/SARCASM] Abuse will be reported. Lucky…. There are usually a few Canadians standing in line with me when I am going though customs.

is there something wrong with my heart, or is it just panic attacks?

I have actually had this problem for as long as I can remember.. I remember when I was still in school.. probably jr. high.. my heart would palpitate sometimes.. just for a few seconds.. and then quit.. and that would only happen every so often.. maybe a couple times a month or even less.. they did an ekg on me and blood work and said everything was normal and that I was just having panic attacks.. as the years went on.. I can remember being in class during high school and my heart would start racing for no apparent reason.. and then after a few seconds it would quit.. then I started being woke up by it.. It would like my whole body would jerk and I would wake up to find my heart racing and I would be out of breath.. and everytime I would get close to falling asleep it would happen again.. and just recently.. this past march things started getting really freaky.. One night in march I was just sitting on my bed playin a game and all the sudden I just didn't feel right.. I couldnt breath and my heart felt like it was beating out of my chest.. only this time it didn't stop.. I felt like I was going to pass out and my fiance caught me as I began to fall off the bed. Things continued all night that night.. and the palpitations were lasting for 10-20 minutes at a time.. I got really nauseated.. light headed.. so dehydrated I was chewing on my toungue.. I didnt have even a little bit of saliva in my mouth.. I was too afraid to go to the hospital that night so I just paced back and forth.. kept going outside for fresh air.. and even made my fiance take me for a drive.. finally things calmed down enough to where I could get a little rest.. well the next day i started feeling somewhat better.. but towards the end of the day.. it started again.. my heart was racing.. and I couldnt breath.. we went to the er.. they did and ekg and said it looked normal.. but they kept me hooked up on it.. while i was hooked up I had another attack.. my heart started racing and reach 160 or more.. i felt like i was going to pass out.. they told me to bare down as if having a bowel movement and i did and after a few minutes my heart rate slowly started going back down but it only stabelized in the 90s.. they ended up having to give me 3 doses of metoprolol through my iv to get my heart rate back in the 70s where they wanted it.. then they prescribed me metoprolol and an anxiety medication.. they didnt seem to help a whole lot.. they took away the palpitations.. but from that point on I have had a constant pressure in my chest.. and I found out recently that i am pregnant so they took me off the medications... well now it's starting back up... and tonight.. i was laying in bed.. and it was almost like my heart jerked.. I felt it beat really hard and fast for a second.. My whole body jerked.. and then I felt like a burning and pressure sensation which is still there to this moment and thats been over an hour ago.. also.. i noticed early when I got out of the shower.. I could feel my heart beating really hard it almost felt like it was twitching and I looked down and my left breast I could actually see what it looked to me like it was twitching along with my heart.. I dont know what's going on.. It's really starting to worry me.. the doctors don't take me seriously.. I have wore a 24 hr heart monitor.. had cat scans.. x rays.. and tons of blood work. and they still come up with nothing.. last month however.. they did think they found a blood clot in my lung on the xray so they started me on heparin and 2 hours later did a lung scan to find no blood clot there.. so they said it was a mistake.. but i wonder if it was just a small one and the heparin got rid of it by the time they did the other scan.. could this all be related? Or am I crazy.. I cant see it being all just panic attacks when most of the time im calm.. just watching tv when it happens.. or laying in bed.. I have an apt. with my family doctor in a couple weeks but I just want to know if anyone has had similar symptoms.. or may know what it could be.. I would really appreciate any advice or information.. Thanks.
