Furosemide FAQ
2 days ago, my cat's hind legs weakened- she was in great pain. I took her to the emergency and a couple of xrays were taken. She was given oxygen as well because she was panting that time. Since the cat was under a lot of stress, blood work wasn't done right away. We were advised that my cat be confined to the clinic, but the price was over our budget. So we took the cat home; the vet prescribed Furosemide 12.5 mg, 3x a day, and Prednisone 5 mg, 2x a day. The following day (today), my cat's breathing stabilized, so we brought her back to the same emergency clinic for a recheck and blood work. To me, my cat seems fine; somehow, even though her condition is grave, I still have high hopes for her because she seem not to give up still. Another vet rechecked her earlier, and he was kind of tactless in his words. I can tell that he is a good doctor, but he could've been kinder and gentler with his words. Urine sample and blood work were done. Acc to the doctor, the results are okay. Other values that are off are at the borderline level. So, my cat and I went home. At home, my cat was in some pain, (I can tell by the way she moves her body), and then, I realized that she doesn't have pain meds. So I called the doctor we've seen earlier; the doctor was apologetic that he forgot to give the pain prescription-- he said that he will have the pills ready for me for pick-up anytime. Since I have not slept for 2 1/2 days, my mind wasn't so put-together at the clinic, that I have forgotten to ask the doctor my other concerns for the cat. I just called him now, and asked about what we can do to help dissolve the blood clot for possible re-circulation in the cat's legs; I even mentioned heparin. He was so blunt to tell me that it will not work because my cat is dying. I was taken aback by this remark, but, I played along, and told him that, I am aware of my cat's serious condition and that she can go anytime, but, I still want to try all the possible means to lengthen her life even for week. But he said, that it will not work. I asked if I could do a request for it and he said no for the same reason that my cat's dying, but he's also hopeful that she gets better (confusing to me). My cats rear legs do have sensation still, everytime i would feel her paws she would kick me, and she can move it forcefully, and raise it strongly when she's lying on her back. Her paws are still pink in color, and not even light pink. Her paws and hind legs are not that cold. I still believe that my cat can pull through with this. And if not, at least I can tell myself that I I did everything to save her. Why can't I get a prescription for heparin or an anti-coagulant? I think I have the right to consider all the means to reverse her condition, even at her advanced stage. I am really confused. I don't want to get mad at this doctor, so please if someone can enlighten me about this. Thank you! : )
my mother is 84 and she has had odema of the legs for ten years? Two weeks ago her legs went back to normal, but she suddenly became out of breath moving a short distance ,the doctor has put her on 40mg furosemide and 2.5 mg cardicor for fluid on the lungs, she has been on these for two weeks ,but with no improvement. Why is the fluid on the lungs but none in legs, and will she get rid of the fluid in lungs
Oedema-medication not working?I posted a while ago about my oedema and the fact that I was tempted to try another diuretic without consulting my GP. I did as I was advised and decided to wait until I had seen the doc, she decided to give me a months trial of Furosemide provided my kidney function was ok..a blood test confirmed this. She did tell me at the time that if the Furosemide wasn't successful at removing or reducing the ankle and foot oedema significantly, the furosemide would be stopped and I would have to continue with my previous diuretic, Bendroflumethazide. She made it quite clear, in the nicest way, that there would be nothing more they could do to help me. The month is practically up and the oedema is unchanged, it is so bad I have real trouble getting my footwear on. I feel so depressed I don't even want to make the appt at the docs (I know it will be a different doc as thge last one has left). Surely there must be something they can do to help me? Seriously, is it right that they try me on 2 different tablets and then say that's it? I have tried to help myself, I am attempting to lose weight, have stopped ordinary salt and only use sea-salt and am drinking more water. I am a full time carer to my disabled daughter and can't be put in this position where I am unable to do normal activities..it is vital that I stay well but the surgery don't seem interested. Please can anyone advise me on what I should do? Thank you.
17 year old Dachshund passed away this morning? My little girl passed away this morning - she was in ICU and I got a call at 5:30am to come in straight away, the furosemide stopped working and had hours left, fortunately I made in in time, they had a room with a blanket and flowers on the floor with her waiting, she walked up to me and collapsed and then I got the Vet to put her to sleep, it was very upsetting, I tried everything to keep her alive but no money or medication was going to stop the heart failure. I have a second Dachshund who is 8 years old, I am worried that she will become lonely, she was been off her food tonight - she must sense something is wrong - I want to get her a new companion, how long should I wait before I get another Dachshund? It is very hard because I feel like I am replacing my old girl but I really just want her back. I spoke to a breeder and was told they expect a little in 2 weeks and will let me have a puppy after 12 weeks - do you think that is a reasonable time to wait to get a new puppy? There is a particular poster who frequently replies with harsh answers, you clearly don't understand how much dog lovers love their dogs - my girl ( 'Chubby' was her name ) was like a child to me - she was my birthday present when I was 7 years old, she has been everywhere with me and every decision I make takes into account the best interests of my dogs - maybe I am one of those crazy dog persons but I have no doubt that I will always have dogs, I can't imagine being without my babies. Here is a few links to photos of my babies - my old girl: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=1699460&l=c8b5c38de1&id=659608400 my young baby: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=1699485&l=fa1d83202a&id=659608400 and both together: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=1699461&l=60fec5cd58&id=659608400
A medical question.Who knows of any other reason for pitting edema other that the heart not working properly?Ive had an echo- cardiogram done and its came out as my heart is working fine, they say its a little enlarged but that's all??...Also my lungs came out looking ok in the xray as well... I'm at my wits end with this!! All Ive been told to do is increase my furosemide to 80mg in the mornings (water retention tablets)... By the late afternoon they are just as badly swollen with pitting edema. this is when I press my finger into the ankle joint, the indent stays there for quite a while... I would really appreciate any information Doctors are giving me no other explanation... Please Help!!! Namairb2... I am 52.... thanks for your answer, I feel the doctors are just passing the buck... Because they don’t know what is causing my problems...I have been on water retention tablets for around 3 years, they were prescribed for Menieres disease.... eventually I ended up with gout and hobbled around for a very long time before they diagnosed high levels of uric acid in the blood, and I had been complaining of terrible pain for months.... I couldn’t even walk...It felt as if my ankles were broken!! They only check my blood if I am in for an emergency such as shortness of breath, or asthma...My weight is increased by four sizes in the last 2 years too, and that doesnt help my health.....or my self esteem!! I have no faith left in the medical profession…. I really don’t know where to turn any more?? But thank you for your advise and help!!
