My Pom/Chihuahua has chronic cough that was dx as enlarged heart...?

I was wondering if anybody has had similar problem with their dog. My 11 year old chi/pom male had a cough the past month that didn't go away so when I took him to the vet a couple days ago, she took x-rays and told me his heart was enlarged and practically pressing his airtube to the back of his spine! I am so sad by this happening to him and unfortunately theres nothing they can do except give him some pills to see if it helps the breathing. He is on Enalapril 2.5mg daily. It has only been 4 days since he's started and theres not a whole lot of improvement just yet. I keep praying that it will help him breathe easier without coughing. If not, they can add another pill which makes his heart contract harder but I want to hold off on that since the vet told me the controversy is deciding to have 3 good months of his life or 8 bad ones . Does anyone have any other suggestions/advice from your experience?

i eat about two spoons of dragon stout ice cream without knowing and now i need to take my pressure pills which is the enalapril 10 mg can it be taken.,

my 12 year old chow is in congestive heart failure or was with fluid in her abdomen. does she need to be on both salix & enalapril? or do they both do the same? this is due to heartworms. iam not sure after looking on line that she needs both meds. iam spending $60.00 a month . she is coughing way less and seems pretty well. her appetite isnt as good however. she is also now on heartgard to kill microfilia(baby worms in her blood) i learned today that heart worms can live up to 7 years! i was praying the big worms would soon die but now i seriously doubt it. iam not doing the injections to kill the adult worms. the risk is too great at her age. i hope that someone can help me figure out if i really need to continue her on both meds! thanks to anyone who can help. i do now have all of my dogs on preventions. this is a horrible disease and iam trying to help my dog. as i said she has improved 99% ! :) i havent asked my vet yet because i was just reading up on it on line & vet is closed! i was looking for ppl who may have had same situation. yes its my fault that my dog has heartworms because i didnt have her on prevention...but i wasnt aware how easily a mosquito could do this! now i do! so my other dogs are on prevention now! yes i love my dog and want to give her the needed meds or i wouldnt be giving her anything! but iam not rich! thanks to nice ppl who answer! boo to ppl who are mean! i have cryed many times over my dog!
